UNMISS (May 2014) Conflict in South Sudan

This report presents the findings of investigations and documentation conducted by the Human
Rights Division of the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS) since 15
December 2013. It follows from the UNMISS Interim Report on Human Rights, released on 21 February
2014. Based primarily on over 900 interviews with victims and witnesses, among others, the report finds
that from the very outset of the violence, gross violations of human rights and serious violations of
humanitarian law have occurred on a massive scale. Civilians were not only caught up in the violence,
they were directly targeted, often along ethnic lines.
