Shteir (2008). Breifing Note on Southern Sudanese Women and the Institution of Bride Wealth

This briefing note is intended to provide an overview of the practice of bride wealth among Southern Sudanese communities in Sudan, and the changing nature of this practice due to the impact of conflict, the experience of displacement to refugee camps, and resettlement to countries such as Australia. This briefing note includes a comparative analysis of the market-driven resurgence of dowry practices in India in order to draw attention to the economic influences on such a practice and the resulting monetisation of the practice and commodification of women involved
